After a disaparaging report from Questor Xylox concerning his performance in Xylox's recent Quest, Mage Questor Grimm Afelnor fears Guild censure or worse. He is therefrore very grateful when Lord Prelate Thorn makes light of the senior Questor's barbed remarks. The reason for Thorn's indulgence of his youngest mage is simple" a dangerous and powerful witch. However, a mental battle to control teh young Questor's will soon begins to cause problems for Thorn. Now aware of the interference with his mind, Grimm incorrectly assumes the magic was cast by his self-appointed nemesis, Xylox. Nonetheless, the young mage has too much on his mind to think about vengeance, as Lord Dominie Horin charges him with a Quest to destroy the baleful influence of Prioress Lizaveta's and her coterie of powerful witches. Unbeknownst to the Dominie and the Questor, the Prioress is Lord Thorn's hated mother, teh woman whose magic defeated Grimm's powerful Questor grandfather.
